Final Evaluation of the Group Piece and my own Choriographic Process
Overall I believe that our group effectively conveyed the stimulus, and message of what it's like living with DID through our group piece. I feel everyone put a lot of thought and effort behind their choreography. For example, I perceived Ella’s section to be particularly effective at conveying a sense of inner struggle to the audience with her use of dynamic partner work to portray a switch in alters within the choreography. A section of the group piece that I feel accurately portrays the original stimulus is at the beginning where we are clumped together as a group to representing the brain from the stimulus and provide to break away from the clump each embodying different emotions as shown in the stimulus.
Over the course of this choreography project I do feel as though I have begun to develop a style of choreography that's more my own. At present, my choreographic style tends to use quite a soft dynamic. I also found that I enjoy incorporating hand and arm jesters and should consider using my legs more when doing so. I was also heavily inspired by the work of Anne Teresa De Keersmaker and in particular one of her popular works ’Rosas’ (You Tube, 2009). Keersmakers use of musicality and dynamic pushed me to play with how I could portray the stimulus not only through my movement but also how I could deepen the connection through the use of musicality.
In the future, I am aware that there are many ways in which I can improve my choreography. For example, I tend to choreograph things in favour of my right leg and right side. This can leave the choreography looking lopsided and also does not cater to those who favour the left so in the future need to keep in mind to use both sides as well as using more directions and levels of the room. I also want to experiment with using different dynamics as well as sharper more angular movements as I tend to gravitate towards being softer.
Something that I could have done to help people pick up the choreography for my section would have been to upload it to the group chat. This would allow others in my group to have access to the choreography and practice it if they were unsure, which could potentially save time going over choreography in the classes going forward. A weakness that arose for me was being unsure of how to link my choreography to the sections around it. Something that could have made this process run smoother would have been to draw diagrams of the formations coming before and after my section and figure out mine from there. Another area that I will be more conscious of moving forward is time management, In the sense that I should plan out how I am going to teach the section of the choreography I'm responsible for in advance in order to save time including being aware of the counts.
In contrast, something that I feel made the process run much smoother for me was doing research into DID and personality disorders at the beginning of the term. This allowed me to have more perspective when creating choreography and long term also helped me with characterisation.
