Choreographic Devices
In the classes leading up to starting our piece, we were set short choreography tasks to help introduce us to choreographic devices. Choreographic devices are tools that can be used to help create or develop movement. I found this immensely helpful in learning how to bring ideas to a group and getting out of my comfort zone with the style of music used. Since starting to develop our piece, we have begun to experiment with the use of choreographic devices.
The first choreographic device used in our piece is imagery. In the beginning, we are huddled in a clump like formation representing the brain as depicted in our stimulus. The brain imagery also ties back to one of the main themes, mental health.
Following this, we used a choreographic device called split focus. This split focus begins when one by one, we break away from the beginning structure using set pathways in the character of different emotions. This movement creates a split focus for the audience. In addition to this, we proceed from this by doing our own loosely structured improvisation (will be set later in the choreographic process) which enhances the split focus effect.
Something that was taken into consideration during this section was possible pinch points that could occur. Everyone is following their own pathways, so we must stay aware of our surroundings so as not to accidentally clump or create too much negative space in one particular area. It was suggested that any near collisions could be used as an opportunity to create an interactive response. This could represent emotions colliding and interacting inside the person’s mind, which also ties back to the theme of mental health.
Throughout the choreographic process to come, we will be sure to continue to explore the use of choreographic devices. Not only to enhance the engagement of our piece but also help connect the movement with our stimulus.
I think you have done a really good job of describing the start of the our piece, you have also included lots of choreographic devises. I think to improve it at the start you could possible describe some of the tasks we did to help us understand choreographic devises, for example when we where give the stimulus of the sky then performed it to the group.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you've described the choreography and have included some choreographic devices. To improve I would suggest describing what some of the choreographic devices mean such as split focus. Also you could perhaps say any challenges and difficulties during this process.
ReplyDeleteFabulous blog Ciara! You went into great detail how the chosen devices in the choreography relate to DID. Next time, maybe go into further detail about what the different devices physically are. Well done though!
ReplyDeleteExcellent description. Are there any videos that have watched in Miss Evans class that refer to certain practitioners' choreographic devices that may have helped you evolve your ideas as well as the classroom tasks? When you talk about negative space and pinch points, are there are other factors in the world at the moment that might be affecting your choreography in terms of contact?
