Choreographic Structure and Responsibility
This week we worked on the structure of the piece in relation to the music and how it tied back to the theme of mental health and DID. To decide on the structure we first listened to the music (Tokio Myers - Bloodstream) and made note of where there were significant shifts in the mood of the piece. Secondly we brainstormed what those sections could represent and resulted with a timeline of a DID affected persons struggle with everyday life . Finally we chose sections that we would individually like to be responsible for organising. This is our final structure as of now:
1- Brain imagery- beginning as a group
2- Everyone representing different emotions
3- Nostalgic memories
4- Negative memories
5- Negative memories trigger a divide in personality
6- A moment of calm before clash with inner self
7- clash/resistance with inner self
8- Realisation that something was wrong
9- Seeking help
10- Fight with inner self
11- Regained sense of normality but the disorder is still present
The section of the piece that I’m responsible for comes just after the subject realizes that they've had a lapse in their mental health and represents them trying to seek help/treatment. Before I start choreographing movement I plan to do further research into types of treatment for DID and maybe use imagery relating to that. I'll also need to talk with Gabby and see how she's thinking of ending her section so I can work on the transition from her section to mine.
I really like how you have clearly listed out all the sections of the music. Also I think the description at the end of the blog post telling us what you are going to do next really helps the reader see where the piece is going to go. To improve i think if you add a bit more detail to the numbered sections would really help the reader understand. For example 7. Fight. you could possible tell us what it is that we are fighting and weather it is going to be a large group of people dancing or a solo.
ReplyDeleteI really like how clearly you've shown how many sections there are however, I would suggest going into detail about what will be happening in each section and what the music is like in that section.
ReplyDeleteI can get a great idea for how you have created your storyboard for your piece as a group. Is there any research that may show any correlations between music and the emotion it can evoke? To show how the story may have developed through the changing music. Are there any particular chords or note that might us feel a certain way?
ReplyDeleteHi Ciara, great blog post! Your points are expressed clearly making it easy for the reader to understand the direction that the piece is heading in. Perhaps to improve you could describe the music in each section with regards to the tempo and dynamics etc, and then how that will in turn affect the choreography.
